Yes we have said adieu to summer, there is a slight nip in the air, & I love it. My yard  looks bathed, happy & fresh. Finally it is sinking in that Fall is here.  The tomatoes are growing, so are the bell peppers & hot peppers & other little things.

The kids are back to school. Summer is at the tail end; in Texas we will still have a few weeks of heat  & then the more pleasant weather creeps in. Hot it is here, but I still feel sorry to see the summer go.The Labor Day, almost officially announced that summer will be gone soon, & gone will be the delightful fruits, berries, the warmth & the colors.

The Shak/Shaag (any leafy green) Bhaja (Stir fried or deep fried) is a big part of the Bengali/East Indian Cuisine. Back home, if I was having a typical Bengali meal, I do not recollect a single day that went without some kind of leafy green, & unlike many kids I would love every preparation of the Shak.

An uncomplicated & adaptable recipe, this allows you to use any vegetable in any combination you want. Do not groan hearing vegetables… for this is a real lovely way to enjoy them. A teensy bit sweet, a lot spicy & the slight tang, along with the aromatic spices turns them into a delectable side dish.

Stir Fried “Pui” with Poppy Seeds

Pui/Poi/Pohi/Valchi or the Ceylon Spinach/Malabar Spinach are all but different names for this leafy Spinach like Green “fast-growing, soft-stemmed vine, reaching 10 m in length. Its thick, semi-succulent, heart-shaped leaves have a mild flavour and mucilaginous texture.” (Wiki). The Scientific name for the Pui is Basella alba. You can read more about it in the Herb Society of America.
