Herbed Beer Bread

The quickest “quick bread” I have ever made!
Flour, sugar and a bottle of beer and you are all set to bake a bread. I have had this on my to do list for a long time now. It is a fun recipe for kids to try out (keep an eye that they do not sneak some sips
) – for there is hardly much to do other than mix up all the ingredients and put it in the oven. A quick one when you are expecting guests, or if you want some warm bread for your dinner. It took less than an hour to complete the entire process. I added Italian herbs for some flavor. I would think cheese, jalapeno, garlic, scallions, onions, fresh chopped herbs or any other spice would work too. Just use whatever you prefer.
I have used a lite beer; hence the light shade in the bread. I would think any kind of beer should work. The flavor and the color of the bread will change with the kind of beer you use.

Herbed Beer Bread
Ingredients:
- 3 cups self -rising flour (or 3 cups all purpose flour+ 2.5 teaspoons baking powder + 3/4 spoon salt)
- 2-3 teaspoons sugar
- 12 oz beer (I have used lite beer)
- Italian dried herbs
- crushed red pepper
- freshly ground black pepper
- 2-3 tablespoons melted butter
(Use a substitute for butter for the vegan version)
Preparation:Combine all ingredients except for the butter in a big bowl. Mix them together in to a dough. (The beer fizzing and bubbling in the flour is quite fun to see ).It will make a sticky dough.
Heat oven to 350 degree F. Grease a loaf pan with butter. Place the dough in the pan and bake for 45-50 minutes.
During the last 10 minutes, brush the top of the bread with melted butter.
Cool completely and slice.

Warm and crusty. The flavor appears very strong when the bread just comes out of the oven, but does mellow as it is allowed to sit and we preferred the bread with mellowed flavors. The first thing we did was make some Bruschetta out of the warm bread. It was really good, since the bread already had the Italian flavors.
I am going to use up the rest of the bread for lunch sandwiches or for some other variation of Bruschettas. The texture makes it great for using it to mop off some thick sauce or stew.

So will you get drunk with the beer bread? No! The alcohol evaporates during cooking. It is safe for kids too.

Hi,
My first time here – love this idea of a beer bread – though I’m not much of a beer lover, would love to bake with it!
We have some leftover bottles of beer from yday – and all other ingredients being simple ones, this one is a must try real soon – will post my feedback soon

I tried this for dinner last night – literally just 2 minutes of effort involved – used half whole wheat flour and it turned out a bit dense but fine – loved the taste of this – I’ll be making it very often.
Easy, eh?
Glad that you liked it!
Thanks for letting me know.

How large of a loaf will this make? Would it be enough for 6 hungry college students to accompany a bean dish?
Also, would oil sub for the butter?
It makes a small 9 inch loaf .. So i don’t think it is going to be enough for the “6 hungry college students” .. I would say each might need half a loaf? .. half a loaf = 5/6 average slices..
I would think you could substitute the butter with oil.. the bread itself does not need any fat.. it is just to brush on the top, so it gets a nice color and slight crusty on the top. margarine should be good too.

UPDATE:
I made this last night for dinner for my friends and I and it was a FANTASTIC. Doubled it, and that ended up being plenty. Put some fresh rosemary also in it, and it had excellent flavor. They all really liked the red pepper flakes!
Thanks again.
Great! happy that you liked it. and I love the rosemary…Thanks for letting me know.

Yum. Reminds me of a soda bread, with that crumbly texture. Must’ve been amazing with the herbs in it.
