I am not even going into that argument. The wisest thing to do is to sit down and enjoy a &#8220;bite&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>That is what a &#8220;<em>tikka<\/em>&#8221; means; a &#8220;bite&#8221;, a \u00a0&#8220;morsel&#8221;. &#8220;<em>Masala<\/em>&#8221; is the usual Indian spice mix; the term <em>masala<\/em> is used in a very broad sense. \u00a0I am not exactly sure if this &#8220;<em><strong>Prawn Tikka Masala<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; is an appropriate name. There are no small bites. This happens to be totally Indian style Tikka Masala. \u00a0I do not like my curries with canned tomato soups. Instead there are real tomatoes, spices and cream involved. More kick. More energy.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing that comes to mind when one hears of Tikka Masala is probably Chicken Tikka Masala. But so much more can go into that lip smacking sauce. Paneer comes next. The prawn is not as popular as the chicken. Most Indian restaurants unfailingly serve Chicken and Paneer Tikka Masala. You may add chicken, vegetables, paneer or seafood. \u00a0I usually combine a part of the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/condiments-dips-and-sauces\/the-basic-gravies\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Makhani Sauce<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span> (which \u00a0I almost always have some frozen) and then the usual onion, ginger and garlic used in most Indian curries. A splash of cream is used to finish the dish. Tastes of sumptuous Golda Chingri cooked into <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/seafood\/chingri-maacher-malaikari-jumbo-shrimps-in-cream-of-coconut\/\" target=\"_blank\">Malaikari<\/a><\/em><\/strong> or <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/indian\/curries\/gravies\/bhapa-shorshe-chingri-steamed-prawns-in-mustard-poppy-seed-sauce\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bhapa<\/a><\/strong><\/em> still line my lips. Prawn Tikka Masala was saved for restaurant visits. It was never made at home. I do not even remember the first time I had Tikka Masala with seafood, or where I did. It could have been way into my adulthood, for I have no fond memories of relishing on this when I was little.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Prawn Tikka Masala served over fragrant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/rice\/vegetable-pulao\/\" target=\"_blank\">Basmati Rice Pulao<\/a>. My favorite way to have it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-39467\" alt=\"Prawn Tikka Masala 9\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Prawn-Tikka-Masala-9-682x1024.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Prawn-Tikka-Masala-9-682x1024.jpg 682w, http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Prawn-Tikka-Masala-9-413x620.jpg 413w, http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Prawn-Tikka-Masala-9-100x150.jpg 100w, http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Prawn-Tikka-Masala-9-400x600.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Prawn-Tikka-Masala-9.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6>Prawn Tikka Masala<\/h6>\n<p><em><strong>Ingredients: <\/strong>(Serves 2-4)<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>1\/2 lb large prawns (I had about 6-8 extra large\/king sized prawns)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>For marinade:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>a sprinkle of salt<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>2 teaspoon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/condiments-dips-and-sauces\/homemade-ginger-and-garlic-paste\/\" target=\"_blank\">ginger paste<\/a> (or grated fresh ginger)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1 teaspoon<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/condiments-dips-and-sauces\/homemade-ginger-and-garlic-paste\/\" target=\"_blank\"> garlic paste<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1 teaspoon lemon juice<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1\/2 teaspoon turmeric<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1 teaspoon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/indian\/indian-kitchen-basics\/garam-masala\/\" target=\"_blank\">garam masala<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1.5 teaspoon oil<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>For the sauce:<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>2- 2.5 tablespoon oil<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>about 8-10 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/basics\/the-most-commonly-used-indian-spices\/\" target=\"_blank\">methi\/fenugreek seeds<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1\/2 teaspoon cumin seed<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1\/2 cup packed (8 oz cup), sliced onion in thin half moon<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>2 large tomatoes, grated (about 3\/4 cup of an 8 oz cup)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1.5 tablespoon julienned ginger (use young ginger without too much fiber)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1 green chili pepper, slit<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>6 heaped tablespoon <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/condiments-dips-and-sauces\/the-basic-gravies\/\" target=\"_blank\">makhani masala<\/a>*<\/em> (without dairy)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1\/4 cup cream + 3\/4 cup skim milk or water<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1\/2 cup chopped red bell pepper<\/strong><em> (Optional)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>salt to taste<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1 teaspoon <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/indian\/indian-kitchen-basics\/garam-masala\/\" target=\"_blank\">garam masala<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1 teaspoon kashmiri red chili powder (optional)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>2 teaspoons kasoori methi\/dried methi leaves lightly toasted on the skillet<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Note:<\/strong> \u00a0<em>You can make this Makhani Masala ahead of time and freeze.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>All spices available in Indian Store or online. See list of spices <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecurry.com\/blog\/indian\/indian-kitchen-basics\/the-most-commonly-used-indian-spices\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">here<\/span><\/a><\/em> and other resources to buy them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>De-vein and shell prawns. You may leave the tail on. Pat dry. Toss with all ingredients of the marinade except the oil. Let sit for about 15 &#8211; 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Add the 1.5 teaspoons of oil in a pan and quickly cook the marinated shrimp, for a few minutes only until they curl and is no more\u00a0transparent\/translucent. Set aside.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Add the rest of the oil to the pan. Add the methi\/fenugreek, the cumin seeds and the slit green chili peppers. \u00a0When the spices sizzle add the sliced onions and cook them in medium heat until they soften and become translucent. Add the tomatoes, and the julienned ginger. Cook until the tomato has reduced and is rid of all raw taste. The oil should be separating on the sides of the pan at this point. Now add the Makhani Masala , the red chili powder if you are using, kasoori methi and the garam masala. Stir everything in and lower the heat. Cover and cook for about 2-5 minutes until the spice mix has blended well.<\/p>\n<p>Uncover and stir and toss. Adjust salt. Add the cooked prawns to the pan, and the bell peppers if you are using them and toss well for the spice mix to coat the prawns. Cook for only a couple or more minutes. Lower heat and add the cream and the milk. Let it come to a simmer. Toss a few times and remove from heat right away.
