The Terrific Tandoori Tofu

This is probably the easiest recipe resulting in a beautiful, delicious & healthy treat. After I made these, I was wondering why the restaurants do not go beyond Meat & Paneer in their Tandoori options.

The above picture is for CLICK! Cheese/Tofu hosted by the Jugalbandis.  None of us are particularly cheese lovers in our family. We do very limited things with cheese. So when I saw the theme of CLICK at the beginning of the month, I was doubtful whether I would participate this time. I would be lying tho’ if I said I did not try to shoot some “Cheese”….However we have pretty well embraced the Vegan Paneer: Tofu.  This might not be a so Terrific CLICK!, but I promise you that it does taste Terrific.

All you need is a store bought Tandoori Paste, available at all Indian Groceries. If that is not accessible to you, don’t worry for I’ll give you a list of the things you would need to make the marinade. You will not be disappointed.

  1. 14 oz block of Extra Firm Tofu
  2. 5-6 Tablespoons of Tandoori Paste (Add more or less depending on how spicy you want it)
  3. 1 Tablespoon Oil
  4. Fresh Lime

If you do not have ready made Tandoori Paste, here is what you need:

  1. 3  Cloves of Garlic
  2. 2″ Fresh Ginger Peeled
  3. 2 Tablespoons Coriander/Dhania seeds
  4. 1 Tablespoons Cumin/Jeera seeds
  5. 2 Tablespoons Red Chili Powder/Cayenne (Adjust amount to your tolerance)
  6. 1/4 Teaspoon Turmeric
  7. 1 Teaspoon Tamarind Paste OR 2 Tablespoons Lime Juice
  8. Salt
  9. 1Tablespoon Oil
  10. 1/2 Teaspoon Kasuri/kasoori methi (Optional: Dried Fenugreek Leaves, available in Indian Groceries as Kasuri Methi)
  11. Red or Orange Food Color

To prepare the marinade:

Make a Puree of all the above ingredients, except the Food Color. Add little water while making the puree, but just enough to make a tight paste. Try not to make it runny, or else it won’t coat the Tofu.

After the puree is done,  stir in & combine the food color.

To prepare the Tofu:

Wrap a few paper towels around the Tofu block & gently try to squeeze out as much water as possible.

Cut the Block into 1.5 inch cubes or rectangles.

Coat the Tofu with the Tandoori paste & Oil  or the homemade marinade paste & let it sit for atleast 3-4 hrs.. possibly overnight. Tofu soaks in more flavor the longer they marinade.

Skewer them & grill them only  for a few minutes.

Heat a Skillet, Coat it very lightly with oil. Place the tofu pieces on the hot skillet & grill them for a few minutes on each side.

Finish off by squeezing some Fresh Lime on the top.

I Pan Grilled them & then skewered them on the toothpick along with some onion & pepper… just Bite size pieces. Pop them in  Enjoy!

Note: Grill whatever veggies you want with it. I did Green Bell Peppers & Red Onions.

This is being sent to Cilantro’s Global Kadai, hosted by the Desi Soccer Mom.
